Why doesn't MS update all their apps in Windows Update?
It just takes adding a command like this:
winget upgrade --allThough it's a bit more complex with Server OS - I'm putting together some instructions, including rolling it out through Intune or Group Policy, here https://blog.glcomputing.com.au/2026/10/winget-upgrade.html
It would make sense for MS to make this a default maintenance procedure, rather than a secret.
Hi GLComputing, Thank you for the comment here. The Windows app ecosystem has always been a bit of a fragmented beast including actual app management and updates. You're 100% correct in calling us out on our own first party apps as well. The good news is we've been working on a lot of improvements behind the scenes over the past couple of years and while most of it hasn't changed app management and updates practices and ease for admins yet, we are getting closer. Some of this is hinted at in a blog post from last year: Introducing a unified future for app updates on Windows - Windows IT Pro Blog. Also check out upcoming major conferences as well for more info.
