Event Ended
Wednesday, Jul 21, 2021, 09:00 AM PDTEvent details
Join this AMA to ask us your questions about what to expect during a migration from Windows 10 to Windows 11 in your environment. Today, you manage your Windows 10 estate using an established process, cadence, tools, servicing model, a ring strategy, security model, etc. so what should one expect in moving to a Windows 11 estate?
Submit your questions during this live hour--or submit questions early (by posting a Comment below) and catch up when it's convenient for you.
This AMA did not have a video feed, but our speakers responded to comments live during the scheduled time in discussion below.

- GovGeekBrass ContributorIn testing Windows 11, I feel crippled by the new Start menu. I'm not technically a fan of the "Live" part of the tiles, but I definitely miss being able to group my apps based on purpose. I'd like to see that make its way back into Windows 11 as an option if not by default. Also, if you're going to keep the new layout, I'd strongly suggest removing "Recommended" in favor of "Recent" in the menu. Overall though, it's been a good experience, even when playing MSFS2020!
- ThomasTrombleyMicrosoftGreat feedback, thank you! I would highly encourage you to share this via the Feedback hub as well. I know that the team is ACTIVELY iterating based on feedback that rolls into this vehicle, so please do so, especially since you're taking advantage of the Windows 11 build via the Windows Insider Program.
- R_StarzuftIron ContributorSame here. Grouping tiles is a benefit of Start in Windows 10. The current start seems more like a phone menu then one on a desktop. Windows 10 desktop is more adaptable than Windows 11 on. For some users the space below the icons is not as useful. Even on a phone the Home screen can be adjusted emphasize what the user finds efficient . Not sure what specific audience wants the Windows 11 setup. Overall appearance of Window 11 is nice just not as functional as Windows 10 start. Muscle memory still keeps me clicking and right - clicking in the corner...
- Michael100Copper ContributorIs there an audio problem? I cannot hear anything.
- ChrisWilliamsBrass Contributorok im not the only one.
- ThomasTrombleyMicrosoftWhile some of our sessions are live, all of the questions get fed into a text-based AMA. This one, however, is text only. Please feel free to post your questions here in chat!
- bethpurnellBrass ContributorSo there is no actual video?
- AnnaChuMicrosoftThanks for joining us for today's AMA! How are you liking the experience so far? Would love to know if you want us to continue running sessions like this in the future.
- KurtGMoody21Copper ContributorFrom a scheduling perspective, it would be an improvement to know which sessions will have live video and which will be chat forum only, but all formats to engage are valuable.
- ChrisWilliamsBrass ContributorI think there was a miss understanding of the type of event since there is a static video but now with the understanding it is more like a forum discussion i dont mind it. Thanks for the answers provided.
- AnnaChuMicrosoftFeedback heard: We definitely want to set clearer expectations on the planned experience for each session i.e. which sessions will have our experts on video, and which ones are just text-based AMAs. Thanks Chris, glad you're enjoying the discussion here.
- GovGeekBrass ContributorIt took me a moment to figure out this wasn't a streamed video + AMA, and that it's only an AMA. 😉 A suggestion I would have, an ability to quickly show all posts so we can search if a question has already been posted. Also, on the same topic and a bit harder to do... but it would be helpful for us or moderators to add hashtag (or similar) topics to group questions together. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
- ReversedxDCopper ContributorWhat exactly does the co-existence of the "21H2" naming on both, Windows 10 builds and Windows 11 builds mean? Doesn't it cause a lot of confusion?
- bethpurnellBrass ContributorHas it started yet? I only see AMA in progress screen.
- GovGeekBrass ContributorSame. And the other video in the same time slot is broken.
- Celina SantanaCopper Contributori see the same issue as well.
- same here Trevor_Rusher. next to the video if I check the notification bell on the top right it does not open / jump to the notified reply or post so it is quite hard to keep track.
- Dennis_EwaldBrass ContributorWill Windows 11 Enterprise also come with bloatware like xbox, candy crush, cortana and so on ?
- DeletedWindows 11 Enterprise will not include third party games pinned to the Start menu
- Dennis_EwaldBrass ContributorBut will it be available on my client if i type xbox into the start menu ?
- raksahooCopper ContributorWhat are the deciding factors for an organization to choose Windows 10 21H2 in place of Windows 11?
- Laser235Copper ContributorYou might think that licensing might be a factor. How is licensing affected when updating to Windows 11
- Dennis_EwaldBrass ContributorTo my understanding licensing should be the same as before https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-11
- "the deciding factors" imho: if they have the staff or can hire them for re-training. Explorer, start screen, settings and how to use them efficiently. next: compatible hardware that meets the requirements. next: UX some might have Win11 and some Win10 which is a big difference in the UI and for the support staff.
- Dave_BackmanMicrosoftGreat question rakahoo but obviously a complex question given every enterprise will have a number of decision points that will have to be factored into any strategic decision to migrate to Windows 11. Certainly there are no enterprise licensing implications. My guidance is to create a formal program around your early adopters for Insiders that is inclusive of LOB apps owners, security folks, a good cross section of end users with a formal feedback mechanism that will assist in identifying those key benefits and capabilities that might make for a compelling decision point to start the migration at a time and pace that makes sense for your org.
- Benoit__laplanteCopper ContributorThe video have no sound and keep the same pic
- ThomasTrombleyMicrosoftThis one is strictly text based only for this session.
- hoyty76Steel ContributorWhy is there a video for a text based session, just have a static graphic so you don't confuse everyone?
- ChrisWilliamsBrass ContributorFor those organizations which have policies still applied through group policy will there be a new release of templates for Windows 11 or will those existing for Windows 10 carry over to Windows 11 devices?
- KevinMineweaser_MSFTMicrosoftHi Chris, Yes, there will be a new ADMX released for Windows 11 GA. Hope this helps, -Kevin
- GovGeekBrass ContributorDo we know what version of WinPE will be compatible with Windows 11 for OSD? Will there be a new update to MDT/PE?
