Hi, is there a way that users can be notified when download starts/finishes? Same for installs?

Oct 24, 2022Hi Stephane, a user could tell this by looking at the settings page. Why do you want the notifications for each of these?
- Stephane LalancetteOct 24, 2022Brass ContributorWhere in the settings page would we see this? I guess it's more for troubleshooting than notifications. So if it's visible on the device or on UC, that could help. For the end-user notifications, it's more so that the user is aware that is system might be slower because updates are installing (we have some devices/users than run heavy workloads, so knowing when it happens (like in sccm they can start the install when they want before the deadline) . - PrateekGargOct 24, 2022Copper ContributorHi Stephane, Windows typically aims to install updates which can disrupt users at a time when they are not using the machines by default. This is overridden by policies to suit business needs. That being said, while I am not sure about the notification side of things, I can talk about the perf side of things. Windows downloads and installs updates in the background such that perf impact should be minimal (if a foreground process needs resources, update process should back off, for example). What sort of impact are the users seeing from updates? We can look into it and see if we can fix if a bug exists.

The Windows Update Settings page should show you any in progress updates. For troubleshooting I'd recommend leveraging Windows Update for Business Reports (previously UC) or logs instead. Totally understand the higher workloads, the idea is USO should be able to help manage the timing for you so you no longer need to do that and we can time the download and install to fall before the deadline
