I work on a vpn and often find I cannot access the internet due to not being able to connect to the internet whilst on the VPN, I have modern software and wondered if WSL could be more vpn friendly.

The best thing you should check is use the latest version of the VPN client. Different VPN vendors add better integration for WSL on their ongoing updates (Cisco is a good example)
