Event details
Looking to simplify setup and configuration for new devices? Let’s talk about Windows Autopilot! The engineering team will be on camera and ready to answer your questions. Whether you are seeking to better understand the differences between Windows Autopilot and Windows Autopilot device preparation—or get into the details of monitoring and reporting—this Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA) session is your chance to ask questions and get answers in real time.
On the panel: Joe Lurie, Maggie Dakeva, and Rob York
This event is part of the Tech Community Live: Windows edition.

We're planning to move from Autopilot to Autopilot Device Preparation. How can we stop users from setting up devices with personal accounts on this screen?

To confirm, is it just the Enterprise SKU that will prevent users from logging in with personal accounts, or also the Pro SKU? What happens if the user attempts to login with a personal account on these SKUs?

Are there any improments on the device naming. we are seeing out of 100 machine enrollment atleast 2 to 5 devices are having same device name. which is making manual activity for IT team to rename the device every month

We don't name devices through Autopilot profiles, we use a configuration profile instead.

Is it planned to add custom OOBE pages to provide onboarding information for a new employee? Just pages with text. I am also interested in simplifying the process of adding a device to the Autopilot list (downloading hardware hash) not using powershell, but for example using a phone (like in Apple Business Cabinet) or the built-in GUI in OOBE.

When are you planning to add export capabilities in Autopilot blade which consists of AAD ID and serial number?

Thanks for your question. The panelists covered this topic around 49:50 and encouraged you to please share more details about your request at aka.ms/IntuneFeedback.

Please also add the "deploymentProfileAssignedDateTime" to the CSV export, to know how old are the AP device entries. This would ease the deletion of such records after some inactivity.

Can you expand on the use case here? What exactly do you want to delete and why do you want to delete it based on this time stamp?

Hi, how do you recommend we install the sccm client on AP with device prep so we can then assign co-management policies?

The panelists covered this question around 11:31.

Microsoft
The SCCM client and Intune typically have conflicts with respect to setting management authority, and that's why we built the explicit flow of AP-into-CoManagement, which does special orchestration. Device Prep doesn't support that orchestration yet, and so I wouldn't recommend installing it during Device Prep.

can Apv2 install user tagged application during pre-provisioning.
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
Windows Autopilot device preparation does not currently support pre-provisioning. We are planning on parity in general between Windows Autopilot and Windows Autopilot device preparation so this may/should eventually be implemented, but is not currently possible. If you require this functionality, you should continue to use Windows Autopilot until we reach a parity state.

Related to Autopilot and Intune: Will we get better remote management features to match what's possible within Intune when managing Android devices? Specifically: locking down a computer when a user is being offboarded, (locking their screen so that they cannot log in, and display a message/instructions on how/where to return their device?) This is something that is REALLY missing from Intune managed devices.
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
This isn't really an Intune or Autopilot challenge to solve, but rather a Windows challenge. "Locking" other device types involves leveraging hardware capabilities as well as software capabilities which don't exist in the Windows ecosystem. There are various paths that may be sufficient depending upon your exact requirements, but without knowing exactly why you want this, it's difficult to fully address.

This offboarding feature would be so valuable!

I had an instance of an apple device being e-wasted and coming online in another country. It wasn't manageable inside Intune, but we locked in Apple Manager pages. What's the issue risk of deleting devices from Intune and how do we reduce risk around unmanaged devices?

Welcome to today's Windows Autopilot AMA! Thanks to everyone who submitted questions and comments early. Let's keep them coming and we'll get to as many as can throughout the hour.

Will there be any Autopilot content at MS Ignite this year? Last year was severely lacking on Endpoint Management information.

Thanks for your question and feedback. This question was covered at 7:33.

I don't think the Ignite session schedule has been finalized yet so that's still TBD. If you provide exactly what you're looking for, we can try to make sure we fit that in somewhere (although ultimately, session selection is a complex beast so no guarantees).

can you all talk about the differences between traditional autopilot and device prep and use case scenarios for using one over the other? and a follow up question: will resellers that have tenant info eventually be able to enroll devices in device prep during the purchase process?

The panelists covered this question around 1:42 of the session.

This is a moving target as Windows Autopilot device preparation is still mostly a work in progress. Our ultimate goal is that Windows Autopilot device preparation will be the main "Autopilot" but that's still a ways off with no specific public timeline to share. For now, please check out the FAQ at Windows Autopilot device preparation FAQ | Microsoft Learn to help learn more about what AP-DP is and does today and whether you can or should move to it.
