Thank you for this feedback, Gavin. This is not something we currently have planned, but we will make sure to add this into our requested feature list.
One workaround to the new tab issue could be to using a URL shortner, like bitly or similar. This will make internal link appear as external links, and as I remember it, external links will open in a new tab. Ugly solution, but it will work in a pinch
