Microsoft Syntex AMA: New document processing pay-as-you-go metered services
Event details
Microsoft Syntex is Content AI integrated in the flow of work. Syntex brings together AI and automation from the Microsoft Cloud to the content and apps you use every day. Whether you’re processing invoices, writing a contract that requires a signature, or struggling to understand the flood of unstructured content, Syntex automates workflows at scale.
For the AMA, we'll spotlight the Syntex document processing features that will be soon be generally available as new pay-as-you-go metered services. We hope this AMA helps answer any questions you have around unstructured and prebuilt document processing, pay-as-you-go pricing, or anything else top of mind.
An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.
Feel free to post your questions about Microsoft Syntex anytime in the comments below beforehand, if it fits your schedule or time zone better, though questions will not be answered until the live hour.

- afnepipeCOLCopper ContributorHi Microsoft Team: How is the consumption of AI Builder units or credits calculated with the new pay as you go model?
- IanStory
Microsoft
Hi Andrés! Pay-as-you-go only applies to unstructured document processing and prebuilt document processing at this time; we do not currently have AI Builder features (structured and freeform) under pay-as-you-go, but we do plan to do that in the future. We'll share more on this when we have a bit more info, hopefully in the next couple of months?- afnepipeCOLCopper ContributorThanks for your answer Ian!
- Mario_FulanIron ContributorSyntex document understanding today only works on documents in SharePoint (not onedrive). Are there any thoughts around having "connectors" or other way to use syntex to extract metadata from documents in other platforms (e.g., Azure storage or AWS)?
- Ankit_Rastogi
Microsoft
Yes, we are thinking about OneDrive but for Azure it is TBD. - afnepipeCOLCopper ContributorYou have the same functionalites using AI Builder. In your case you have to use power automate and AI buider to extract information from OneDrive.
- afnepipeCOLCopper ContributorHi Microsoft team. I'm Andres, technical specialist on Versafile. I would like to know: Syntex pay as you go licensing model the same as charging for azure cognitive services?
- wbaer
Microsoft
Pay-as-you-go is a new way to pay for Microsoft Syntex using an Azure subscription, which allows you to get started with Microsoft Syntex without any license commitment or upfront purchasing. This change is currently limited to document processing services with Syntex and does not have an effect on content assembly, content query or other Syntex services.- afnepipeCOLCopper Contributor
Thanks wbaer. Do you have an example of what the invoice would look like? I mean, what will the client see when he/she receives the bill for the service?
- michelsprangerCopper ContributorHi, thanks for the opportunity to ask questions. Are there plans to make Microsoft Graph endpoints available to interact with annotations and universal annotations layers?
- Kristen_Kamath
Microsoft
We do plan to add this in the future, but we don't have a timeline to share at the time.- michelsprangerCopper ContributorThat's alright, thanks for your answer.
- Mario_FulanIron ContributorThe AI Builder models for forms and freeform only work today for pdf and certain picture formats. Any plans to extend this to other office document formats?
- Kristen_Kamath
Microsoft
The team is exploring expanded file type support, but no timeline to share at this time.
- Mario_FulanIron ContributorWe have a number of customers who currently have a per user license for Syntex and are asking about how they "migrate" to a paygo model. Any information on this such as a descriptive blog or white paper? I know the basics, but not sure how to best guide them.
- IanStory
Microsoft
Hi Mario! We will be publishing more details on this on March 7 when we go live, per the blog post - https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-syntex/microsoft-syntex-pay-as-you-go-will-be-generally-available-on/ba-p/3749868 - however, we should note that any customer with a per user license of Syntex does not have to "migrate" to pay-as-you-go, they can continue to use all of the features conveyed in the per user license until the end of their Microsoft agreement, including "true up" and "true down" as needed.
- Lalit MohanCopper ContributorCan you please advise where should I refer the how to videos series? We would like to take Syntex capabilites to the leadership team - can you please share the presentation that i can refer and prepare accordingly - I am responsible to roll out this product for 11K + employees in our organisation

- ja_Hor_365Brass ContributorAs planned in the AI BUILDER roadmap, there will be improvements in its models and openings in others, these changes will be immediately reflected in Syntex
- JamesEccles
Microsoft
Currently Syntex uses AI Builder for two types of models- structured and freeform. Any improvements that come to these models will immediately be available for use via Syntex.
- cchopinCopper ContributorHello. I'm Christophe from France. Thanks for this opportunity. Here is my first question: can syntex be used to scan and classify the existing electronic documents of a company?
- Mario_FulanIron ContributorSyntex can classify. The scanning would have to be a separate process (perhaps a scan to SPO tool or similar). Once the doc is in SharePoint Syntex can process
- cchopinCopper ContributorMany thanks Mario!
- IanStory
Microsoft
Yes, for sure - Microsoft Syntex provides a set of capabilities to do this, optimized for different types of documents. The four primary services that we provide for existing electronic documents, today, are: unstructured, structured, freeform and prebuilt document processing. Each has pros and cons, and you can learn about all of them here - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/syntex/model-types-overview?view=o365-worldwide- cchopinCopper ContributorMany thanks Ian!
- PankajWBBrass ContributorI would like to learn a bit more about Syntex backup/restore capabilities which were referenced in another AMA or Ignite blog
