When I reviewed the Known issues in the new Microsoft Teams desktop client - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn, the What features are changing? Section indicates that the “Notify when available" feature will not exist in the NEW teams. The 'What features are changing?' section specifically says:
- CLASSIC Teams: Allow users to follow another user's presence, then notify them of availability.
- NEW Teams: Select a user’s avatar or profile photo anywhere in new Teams to quickly get an overview of their online status, next available calendar slot in Outlook, work hours, local time, or work location (remote or office).
This is a popular function and is preventing some of our customers from transitioning to the NEW Teams. Can you please update if this will be developed as a feature in the NEW Teams?

FYI, I also posted in the Teams section of the Tech Community and haven't not received any responses from Microsoft yet (only others who want this feature back):

Saw this while cleaning up my inbox, just in case you haven't found it by now:
In the meantime, this feature is back but somewhere else entirely (at least for Mac):
- Open the Settings -> Notifications and activity -> Manage status notifications
- Add the employees you want to get notified about.
I don't like this solution though, as sometimes I just want(ed) to get notified to have a call with that person and not to stalk him/her all the time. 🙃
