AMA: Enrolling modern devices with Windows Autopilot
Event details
I would like to see the "need" for local administrator access eliminated. I have never needed root access to my phone.
Through simplifying our configurations and attempting to manage everything through Intune (and the Company Portal), we have come close.
There are still hardware vendors not publishing drivers through Windows Update (*cough* Logitech) and software vendors not publishing their software in the Microsoft Store (*cough* Adobe). I think we as an industry need to push back on these vendors. What exactly is their resistance? Could there be a need that Microsoft has not accounted for, are these companies being lazy, or could they be taking advantage of the full-control admins grant to their PCs?

Windows and iOS are vastly different OSes with vastly different purposes and capabilities, so the comparison is not in any way equivalent, however, we have offered much more locked down and constrained commercial versions of Windows previously and these have not had any sort of significant success -- Windows RT and S Mode.- treestryderJul 22, 2022Iron Contributor
As long as they are allowed to do whatever they want, software and hardware vendors have no incentive to change. Without Microsoft putting their foot down, the gaps are filled by administrators. We are forced to not only take on the added risks associated with these poor practices and design, but we are also forced to re-package crap that takes advantage of it, attempt to apply safe guards around them and clean up any messes. Whereas, most home users just click past the UAC prompt and move on, then buy a new PC when their virus laden PC runs too slow.
This is what upsets me so much about what has happened to the Microsoft Store. The store WAS more than just a list of installable apps. By requiring legacy apps to be APPX packaged, or better, MSIX packaged UWP apps, it got us closer to the security and privacy model that Android and iOS have.
