Hello kamal_grpt ,
In a Windows Server 2025 (on-premises) environment, recovering accidentally deleted log files depends on the critical factor of whether protection mechanisms were enabled on the volume prior to deletion. If the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) or Windows Server Backup is in use, there is a high probability of recovering the log file; however, if neither has been configured, your only option is to use third-party recovery tools.
Method 1: Restore from "Previous Versions" (VSS)
Volume Shadow Copy Service is a native Windows Server feature that automatically creates point-in-time snapshots of volumes at scheduled intervals. If this was enabled on the volume where your logs were stored, you can restore them directly from Windows Explorer.
Steps:
- Navigate to the folder that originally contained the deleted log file (e.g., C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs or a custom log directory).
- Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Click the Previous Versions tab.
- Select a snapshot date/time from before the deletion and click Open to browse its contents.
- Locate the log file, then copy it to a safe location on the server.
Important: This method only works if VSS was enabled on that volume beforehand. If the "Previous Versions" tab is empty, no shadow copies exist.
Method 2: Restore from Windows Server Backup
If the server was configured with Windows Server Backup (either to a local disk or network share), you can restore individual files from a backup image.
Steps:
- Open Windows Server Backup from Server Manager or the Administrative Tools.
- In the Actions pane, click Recover.
- Select This server and click Next.
- Choose the backup date that contains your log file and click Next.
- Select Files and Folders as the recovery type.
- Browse the backup tree, select the log file, and restore it to its original location or an alternate path.
Method 3: Third-Party Data Recovery Software
If no backup or VSS snapshot exists, the file's data may still reside on the disk until overwritten. Third-party tools perform deep scans to locate deleted file.
If the solution helped, would you mark it as solved?
