Windows 11's Windows Security App can't open.
- Sep 01, 2021
Hello,Suggest try the following steps:
- Open PowerShell by using Administrator rights
- Copy and paste Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage to the PowerShell window and press enter
- Close the PowerShell and retry
No luck here either. New laptop last week with OEM Windows 11 Pro, had Macafee preinstalled, uninstalled it and Defender was working fine last week. Open today and see a task bar icon saying Windows Security needs attention, click on it and nothing happens, tried to open, nothing happens. Went through all options I have found in this thread and now when I click the icon or try to open normally it now flashes a window for a split second that closes again. I have not yet tried repairing through the apps list as it doesnt show in there. At a loss!
Update: I found an app in the apps list right at the very bottom that had no name, just Microsoft Corporation in the lower half in small writing (upper half where name normally is was blank). I used the 3 dots to go to advanced and repair and repaired and reset, Now the name appeared and its named Windows Security and has moved back up the list to the correct position. However when trying to open security stil just flashes up a window for a split second and closes automatically. I have run all other commands sucessfully Powershell as an administrator, no change at all.
Update 2: even though I had uninstalled Macafee antivirus, I downloaded and ran the macafee uninstall tool (took around 15 minutes to run), rebooted but still the same. Downloaded and ran the Windows Security Troubleshooter, it came back with Phishing Filter was not enabled and it says it fixed that. Still no change. Only thing I have not done is the System Restore - I am reticent to do this as it has taken me the last 3 days to get everything installed and operational for work and I don't have the time to do it all again!
I gave up.. I have tried everything from every search result I can find except the one where you copy files from a WindowsApp folder as I cant change the permissions to get access to it for some reason. I have now downloaded and installed AVG free, can't be bothered doing a rebuild on a brand new laptop!

- PeanutsMagicApr 26, 2023Copper ContributorI am in the same boat. I've literally tried everything. In my case, I have Acronis Cyber Protect. I uninstalled it and tried but Windows Security just shows a blank screen for a few seconds and shuts down on its own.
I did the system reset, and then it launched, but as soon as I reloaded my apps from a backup, it stopped loading.
At the very least, the program should show a message dialog, or log one in the Event Viewer, saying why it won't run. It should not require all this cryptic magic that appears in this thread. This is a product oriented to the general public, not just IT professionals.- JustAskDaveApr 26, 2023Copper Contributor
PeanutsMagic I know it's an absolute joke right. So many people with the problem going back over several years and still no official fix. Will keep hoping, in the meantime AVG is chewing memory and annoying me...
