Windows 11 multi monitor taskbar not working properly
The Windows 11 multi monitor taskbar is not working properly. The taskbar is visible on the secondary monitors but seems to have little functionality or is "broken". Tested this on multiple systems.
If using: "When using multiple displays, show my taskbar apps on" has no effect with any setting.
This is a "known" issue with the release. It's noted on the release notes.

- bhardwajaalok2Copper ContributorBro, you are right, it is mentioned in "Issues" section in blog in bottom. Thanks for sharing it.

PhilSmith5 Unfortunately, it was never fixed for the global release. Glad to see this issue reported months ago and nothing was done about it!

PhilSmith5 is it still listed? because it is still a problem in the full release officially launched and installed via windows update.
- rroschinCopper ContributorAlso, I am not able to move my taskbar to the top and there is no option for "small" icon size. Quite annoying.

I've just updated my windows to win 11 and the first thing I hated was to not be able to move the task bar to the right ou top or left like we did all this time with previous windows versions. Seriously? Will that be removed? If so, I'll come back to win10.
I use 3 monitors, and only the main monitor keep the icons, the 2 others has nothing on them, not even the date and time, it is pretty annoying this, I hope MS adjust it.

- takaokimCopper ContributorI agree with you, Windows 11 is supposed to bring new improvements and not limitations. I wonder if Microsoft's own software engineers do not find this annoying?
- bhardwajaalok2Copper ContributorI am using window 11 build 22000.51 with two displays, using second display for extended screen. When i choose to show taskbar on multiple screen, taskbar showing on primary screen, but on second screen, a section appears in bottom but no icons are showing. To overcome this issue i used third party software "object dock", https://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/. while using this software, make taskbar show only on first screen, so that bottom portion of second screen not waste.
I am not doing any promotion, i just want to give temporary solution to those guys who want to use window 11 (not want to go back to window 10) but facing this issue. I have search alot to find this temporary solution. If it help, give a like.- sent1nel101Copper ContributorYou can turn off the taskbar on other displays in settings. No need for a third party app just for that.
- xdtrammellCopper ContributorJust wanted to add that I am having the same issue the taskbar shows on the 2nd monitor but nothing appears on it.

Got an Update Today. 22000.65
TaskBar is Working Fine on second Display!- SuperSaienBlueYTCopper Contributor
rana2hin the taskbar will not unhide itself on another monitor if you have hide the task bar on so it isn't fixed completely yet
- GhrystBrass ContributorCorrect, this is still a problem today.
The ONLY way to unhide the taskbar is the very convoluted process of hovering the mouse over the very bottom of the screen at the same time as pressing the windows key.

Found a fix on the official release: Simply unpin any app on the taskbar, and/or re-pin it. Taskbar auto-hide works after that.
*EDIT* There's a catch: This has to be done every time either Windows is booted, or Windows Explorer is restarted. Meaning, this is still a glitch Microsoft needs to fix, which is apparently resolved in build 22000.449.
- nishants2811Copper ContributorAfter reading all the posts I realized that it's a known bug, I was able to fix the issue for now by myself.
Steps to get the Taskbar working on 2nd display monitor:
1. Go to Taskbar settings.
2. Expand Taskbar behaviors submenu.
3. There will be a checkbox on option- Show my taskbar on all displays with further down menu to select where do you want to show it.
4. Uncheck the checkbox and check it again.
It just removes the taskbar on 1st uncheck and it kind of refreshes the taskbar and all the icons are displayed now.
NOTE: I have not restarted my computer as of now, so I don't know if it will be there after restart or not. But doing it again will not be a hassle.
I hope it helps 🙂- BrentJohnBrass ContributorFor my case, it doesn't work. In fact, if I do this once it's functioning properly, it actually causes the problem.
Appreciate the suggestion, though.- nishants2811Copper ContributorWhat kind of problem you are facing after doing this?
- JoetheCounselorCopper ContributorThanks for trying! This is more or less what other people have offered and I have done it multiple times with no changes. No taskbar on the secondary monitor unless I turn off autohide. I think the bug lies in it being always auto hidden because you can't rest the cursor on the base of the taskbar, as I have mine vertically, though moving it to the side doesn't seem to help, either.
- britininiCopper ContributorThis worked for me, thank you!
- NikyxjCopper ContributorThis is just a preview version. So this kind of issue will always be present. It probably might just be a bug and will get fixed in future builds. This is the reason they are testing the build before releasing it to everyone. So don't worry 🙂
- DPClarke42Copper ContributorI created an account and logged in just to point out that this isn't an answer. It's a meaningless statement that doesn't actually address the issue. "Yeah that's a thing" is not helpful to anyone.
- manassesitorusCopper ContributorNot really. This taskbar problem still exists even in the final release version. If you plug the second display, via HDMI, after windows on, then the icon of currently opened apps not showing properly in in the taskbar on the second display. So, the second display must be plugged before the windows is started

Well, the bug is present in the final revision of windows 11.

Here is a work around in the form of a bat file you can put in your startup folder
"copy %userprofile%\shortcut.name" "%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar"
ping -n w 5000 1.1.1.1 >nul
Del "%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar\shortcut.name"it pins something to task bar, waits 5 seconds and unpins it, which kick starts the taskbar responding to the mouse on screen to
Or you can just point mouse at bottom of screen and right click and it will pop up as well
