Sounds like you are trying to update a nickel release with a germanium release. You're are probably a Beta not a Canary or Dev channel insider. Please review the differences: https://www.askvg.com/windows-11-insider-channels-canary-dev-beta-and-release-preview/#difference_between_canary_dev_beta_and_release_preview_channels

    Now for Canary and Dev. - Microsoft has released an identical Windows Insider build (this allows you to switch to Dev. )  This is a temporary opportunity to downgrade the Insider channel.

      That would be wonderful if I could get there. I've killed the updater, removed the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarted, and it always comes back to Windows 11 Insider Preview 26058.1000 (ge_release) which fails.

        You can download ISO - 26080 , but it doesn't work as an in-place update ( Maybe, just serve as a clean Insider install ), it's better to wait for the next ISO, 

        To properly update in place.
