Where to obtain Windows XP in 2025?

I am putting together a retro PC from the XP era and haven't used XP in at least 10 years. I have since tossed all my OS discs, but also know XP is insecure to use now. I heard you can install an unofficial SP4 to get it much safer though. Anyway, where is a legit/"safe" place to get an XP installer or ISO that is "secure" that isn't going to be full of malware? I am just trying to run old benchmarks and a handful of games, but would like to be online. Any advice from those running XP on retro PCs welcome, this is my first one!

Running Windows XP today for retro games is totally fine — just be aware it’s out of support (no more security updates or official installs).

    Here’s some advice:

    • Only use legit installation media you already own (your old discs or licensed ISO) — sourcing “free” XP ISOs online is risky and may be full of malware.
    • Consider isolating the PC from the internet, or use it in a local, offline-only setup. If you must go online, use up-to-date antivirus, careful browser selection, and perhaps a firewall.
    • Upgrade to a newer OS if you ever plan full internet surfing or sensitive tasks — XP is great for old benchmarks/games, not safe for general modern use.

I’ve got a retro XP rig too, so I feel you. Honestly, the safest bet is to grab an official XP ISO from something like archive.org’s “Windows XP SP3 (Microsoft Official)” uploads — they’re clean retail images, not random modded ones. Then just install the Unofficial SP4 (it rolls in all post-SP3 updates).

I’d still keep it offline as much as possible — or use a browser like MyPal if you really need internet. For old games and benchmarks, that setup runs great and feels like 2005 all over again.
