- CarloRiversoCopper ContributorDollars to doughnuts AlabamaTom's clean install suggest works.
I didn't want to go thru all that, so I entered Windows Insider\Dev.
It does have one minor drawback- doesn't properly report one key patch is installed, so third party software like Belarc flags missing update; but otherwise everything fine & Windows Update thereafter runs properly.
It is possible to thereafter leave Windows Insider \ revert to regular Windows, but all personal data gets wiped in the process. And don't want to go thru that backup and restore step either.
But that's a viable option too.
I wouldn't hold off waiting for MS to fix though- could be months, years, never. - John_Bloggs1950Copper ContributorI received a Three Reply Badge, That will keep me happy while I play with a faulty product.

We couldn't install this update but you can try a few dozen more times, we have no intention of solving the problem or even telling you what the problem is.
My next laptop will be a Macbook.
- John_Bloggs1950Copper ContributorTime to get a Mac.
- ToddV71Copper ContributorNot necessarily my preference, but lookin more and more like that is the solution. Microsoft has been rolling downhill for quite some time now.

John_Bloggs1950 If you have noting constructive to say, go for it.
Bet a Big Mac if you want, I don't care.
- John_Bloggs1950Copper ContributorWhy is not constructive to suggest a product that is fit for purpose? Do you work for MS? If so, then suggest a solution.

I have tried all the ways shown on the internet including SFC and DISM, but to no joy, gets to 36% then...Something didn't go as planned!, kept trying for 3 weeks then I had a brain wave, would disabling my Malwarebytes help, it did! got to 96% then...Something didn't go as planned, so went back into malwarebytes and stopped the launch in windows startup, because the update restart, re-activates Malwarebytes, started the update yet again and...100% I would imagine that this may apply to all good anti virus software except Defender, hope this works for you, I'm now a Happy Man!
Microsoft please tell us to do this before we start an update if it's required.
- Gaz4088Copper ContributorI think that there's an echo in here... Didn't I just say the same thing 9 days ago?
- Gaz4088Copper ContributorThe problem for me was Malwarebytes Premium. I disabled it from running at start, exited the program and then re-tried the update, which then worked.

Gaz4088 that was it! Thank you very much

- T_Hudson760Copper ContributorThank you, thank you, thank you! This worked for me after spinning my wheels for 6 days as my computer was rebooting multiple times after the update only to undo the update because "something went wrong". I have to wonder why Microsoft doesn't provide a better way to address issues with their OS updates!
- RusthammerCopper ContributorLike, is that even a fix, this is so silly, who cares to install malwarebytes or some random stuff, this is not even a fix for most

-In Windows Update, go to Advanced Options --> Optional Updates.
-Select 2023-10 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 22H2 for x64 (KB5031905).
-After installing this update, re-run Windows Update and click RETRY on the Win 11 23H2 install.
-After installation of Win 11 23H2, re-run Windows Update to install: 2023-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5031455). This final update was very slow to install, so be patient.

Kr4myajHI. I had the same problem as you and I tried all the solutions and even turned off the Windows update services but nothing. I have a solution that might help you. try checking windows update's optional updates by going to windows update-)advanced options-)optional update, and update all. this might work like in my case.
