System Tray Icon Area Needlessly Taking Up Space

Why is Windows 11 needlessly taking up all this space on the task bar for .. nothing? It only happens when I have many windows open.

You're not alone—this is a known quirk in Windows 11. When you open many windows, the system tray icon area (near the clock) sometimes expands unnecessarily, even if there are no extra icons showing. It’s likely a UI bug or poor spacing logic in the taskbar’s layout system.

    Possible reasons:
Overflow logic: Windows reserves space for hidden icons or the taskbar overflow tray, even when it’s not in use.

Dynamic resizing glitch: When many apps are open, the taskbar tries to keep space for system tray responsiveness, causing it to stretch awkwardly.

Notification center buffer: It may also be holding room for pop-up toasts or quick actions, even if they're not active.
