Network and sound button not opening when I click on it

The network and sound button on the lower right side of the taskbar is not popping the Wi-Fi window where I can select the network from there.

It stop working when I installed a virtual machine, so I'm inclined to believe that's related to the problem. 

But even after I uninstalled the program, I can't find a solution.
