Most desktop icons disappeared -- tied to deleting OneDrive folder?

Win 11 Pro 24H2, recently updated from Win 10. I don't want OneDrive on my computer and had manually deleted all indications of it except one, the OneDrive folder. That was to be the last step, along with its being an unwanted gathering place for screenshots. So I compared what was in the OneDrive folder with what I had copied over from my Win 10 file backups (SyncBack Pro). Most folders in OneDrive were empty, but the Desktop folder was one of maybe three that needed comparison with my non-OneDrive ones before deleting. Having done all that, I opened Windows Explorer and deleted the OneDrive folder. The result: all my desktop icons had disappeared. A restart brought back 16 of the roughly 60 that had been there. So I dragged and dropped the other ~45 back onto my desktop from the other Desktop folder. But that wasn't enough...

The OneDrive folder returned and continues to return after each delete and restart. It now also has the 45 icons that I dragged over from the non-OneDrive folder, but not the other 16. So it seems like I might be caught in a vicious circle: delete the OneDrive folder and lose most of the desktop icons, and then have to replace them again from the other folder. What's the way out, one that allows deleting the OneDrive folder and keeping it gone? Thanks,
