KB5077241 fails to install

I just received the notification for update KB5077241. It downloads and seems to install until the end, then an error message appears in the update dialog:

Install error - 0x800f0983

I've tried rebooting, and waiting for the update to re-start by itself, it has been in a loop doing that and failing since yesterday.

I tried the Windows Update troubleshooter, it ran for a while and finished telling me it could not fix the problem, to contact support, which I did, and they directed me to post the issue here.

I am running Windows 11 Home, version 25H2, and am enrolled in the Insider Release Preview channel. This is a fresh OS reinstall, and it has been working well for the past two weeks.

I had to reinstall after more than four years because of persistent issues with Windows Updates in my previous installation. I was unable to resolve those problems, so I opted for a clean install, which functioned perfectly until today.

Any advice on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I too am running Windows 11 Version 25H2. After multiple attempts, I have given up trying to install Update KB5077241 on my recently bought in December 2025 Dell All in One PC; error 0x800f0983. However, my Nephew has successfully downloaded it and installed it on his super-duper Gaming PC with no problem at all? Given this obvious problem with it I'm both surprised and very disappointed with Microsoft for not offering a) a cumulative update / patch that supersedes this and b) a general notification to that end. A mate told me that it is required that this troublesome update is installed before the end of April or it will cause problems...anyone heard the same?

I have been hit with this useless update, it has messed my PC up, altering service files (disabled) and now I have lost my start up button, when right hand clicking the start up, the black dialogue box that shows up when you type in the run box flashes then disappears. Restarting explorer does nothing either. So thanks very much MS. Any other help from the experts here would be really grateful, I don't want to do a full factory reset at the moment as it seems the issues are minor but annoying.

The error 0x800f0983 during the installation of KB5077241 indicates a problem with the Windows Update process, often related to corrupted update components, issues with the Windows Update cache, or system file problems.

This killed my surface pro 8.  After install the memory usage went 90%.  Had to do a reset, and spent a lot of time getting it back to normal.  The KB is now sitting in win updates.  Think I've blocked it with CMD prompt.

I would wait for the next cumulative update on march 10 and ignore this one simply. The new update will totally override this errored update.
