Install OS on drive with data

Can I install my OS on an SSD that already has games and data on it?
Or should I move those files to hdd before installing windows on the ssd?
And what would be the consequences if i installed windows on my ssd that already has data on it?

    Hi,

Yes, you can install Windows on an SSD that already has data on it — but I wouldn't recommend it unless you’re okay with the risks.

When you install Windows on a drive without wiping it first, the installer will try to preserve existing files, but:

    • Some programs (especially games) might not work afterward
    • You could end up with duplicate system folders (Windows.old, etc.)
    • Boot or performance issues can happen, especially if the old OS files are still present

In my experience, it’s just cleaner and more reliable to back up everything you need to another drive, wipe the SSD during the install process, and start fresh. Then you can move your games/data back afterward.

It takes a little more time, but you avoid a lot of weird headaches down the line.

During the installation process, Windows will typically format the partition where you're installing, which can erase existing data if you choose that partition.
