If you're experiencing issues with Windows updates, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:
Check your internet connection: Ensure that you have a stable internet connection. Windows updates require a reliable internet connection to download and install.
Restart your computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve update-related issues. Restart your computer and check if Windows updates start working again.
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter specifically designed to fix Windows Update problems. Here's how you can run it:
- Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
- Click on "Update & Security."
- Select the "Troubleshoot" tab from the left-hand menu.
- Scroll down and click on "Windows Update" under "Get up and running."
- Click on "Run the troubleshooter" and follow the on-screen instructions.
Clear the Windows Update cache: Sometimes, corrupt files in the Windows Update cache can cause issues. You can try clearing the cache by following these steps:
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type "services.msc" and press Enter to open the Services window.
- Scroll down and locate the "Windows Update" service.
- Right-click on it and select "Stop."
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the following location: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
- Delete all the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder.
- Go back to the Services window, right-click on the "Windows Update" service, and select "Start."
Manually download and install updates: If Windows Update still doesn't work, you can try manually downloading and installing updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog website. Go to https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx, search for the specific updates you need, and download the appropriate files. Then, run the downloaded files to install the updates.
Disable third-party antivirus software: In some cases, third-party antivirus or security software can interfere with Windows Update. Temporarily disable or uninstall any third-party antivirus software on your computer and check if updates start working.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need to seek further assistance from Microsoft Support or a computer technician, as there could be underlying issues with your system that require advanced troubleshooting.
- fogbankBrass ContributorAlthough indirect, thank you for the Troubleshooting List, BPs, and the link. They'll come in handy for someone (me) sometimes, but it's better to have them R2G and sharable for any last-minute "Erm. Need a little help over here..." moment(s).
