How to extract audio from MP4 on Windows?
Hi everyone,
I have several MP4 video files, and I need to extract the audio track (preferably in MP3 format). I'm looking for free and simple methods to extract audio from mp4 on Windows.
What tools do you recommend? (Built-in, third-party software, or command-line?)
- Are there any lossless methods? (I want to preserve audio quality.)
- Any step-by-step guides for beginners?
- I've heard about online audio extractor, but I'm not sure which is the most reliable.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I tried 3 free apps but none of them worked in 2025. If you don't want to waste time on those crappy suggestions, then go with this one at least worked very well on my computer.

When extracting audio from an MP4 video, there are several important things to keep in mind to ensure the best quality, compatibility, and privacy.
1. Audio Format Selection Matters
Choose the right output format based on your needs:
MP3 – Most widely supported and compressed.
WAV – Uncompressed, high-quality, but large file size.
AAC/M4A – Better compression and quality than MP3, often used by Apple devices.
OGG/FLAC – Great for preserving quality, but may not be universally supported.
2. Audio and Video Sync Issues
If the video has variable frame rates or sync problems, extracting audio might result in slight desynchronization or dropouts. Use professional audio extraction tools for better handling.
3. Check for Multiple Audio Tracks
Some MP4 files have multiple audio tracks (e.g., commentary or different languages). Make sure you’re extracting the correct one. FFbmpeg and V1LC let you choose the track index.

Things to Keep in Mind
File size limits may apply (often 100MB–250MB on free plans).
Internet upload/download time can be slow for large videos.
Privacy risk: Avoid using online tools for sensitive or personal videos, as uploads are processed on external servers.
P.S. If you'd like a no-upload solution for sensitive files, I can recommend offline audio extractor software or command-line tools.

Why recommend online website or software if you want to extract audio from MP4? Uploading your personal or sensitive video files to online servers can expose your data to security risks. Many free online tools may not have strong data privacy policies, risking unauthorized access or storage. And restrict the maximum upload size (often between 50MB and 500MB). Large video files, common in high-quality recordings, may not upload or process properly.
They may not preserve the original audio codec or quality, especially if converting to MP3 or other lossy formats. You have less control over the extraction process compared to desktop software or command-line tools. Uploading and downloading large files can be time-consuming and dependent on your internet speed. If your connection drops, the process might fail, requiring you to restart.
About extracting audio from MP4, use online tools is quick for small, non-sensitive files but not ideal for large, private, or high-quality audio extraction tasks on your Windows PC. Desktop tools give you more control, better privacy, and higher quality results.

Sometimes you just want the music or voice without the video. For example, saving a podcast or a speech as an MP3 so you can listen on your phone or MP3 player without fussing with the whole video. Extracting audio from MP4 is generally pretty safe and straightforward. I’ve done it myself tons of times without any issues. Usually, the main thing to watch out for is making sure you’re using a trusted tool or software — some shady or poorly made ones can mess up your files or even pose security risks.
From my own experience, if you use popular tools like V11C, ffmpag, or online converters from reputable sites, you should be good. Just double-check that your source file isn’t corrupted or infected, and avoid downloading random tools from sketchy sites.
To extract audio from MP4, no major danger in doing it — just stick to reliable software, keep your system updated, and don’t rush. Easy peasy!
