How to 100% wipe a pc before selling for windows 10 and windows 11
The Reset this PC feature mainly removes file references instead of physically destroying the data. Even when you choose "Remove everything,"the system often just marks space as available, which means underlying data can still exist on the drive. With the right recovery tools, portions of that data may still be restored. This is why we need a dedicated app for 100% wiping a pc before selling.
Another issue is that users often skip or misunderstand the "Clean data" option. If this setting is not enabled, the reset behaves more like a quick format, which is much easier to recover from. Many people assume a reset is fully secure by default, but that is not always the case.
For SSDs, the situation is even more complicated. Modern solid-state drives use wear leveling and hidden storage areas, so standard reset or overwrite methods may not touch all physical memory cells. This leaves a chance that fragments of old data remain inaccessible to the OS but still recoverable with advanced techniques.
Finally, Reset this PC does not follow certified data destruction standards (like DoD or NIST). For personal use, it may be acceptable, but for business environments with sensitive data, it does not provide the level of assurance needed before selling or disposing of hardware.
