How do I remove watermark from PDF on a Windows PC?

One of the most efficient ways to remove all watermarks from PDF in 1-click:

On Windows, you can remove a watermark from a PDF using a dedicated watermark removal feature in PDFgear or Adobe Acrobat Pro. Windows’ built-in PDF viewing and printing tools do not provide this function. Work on a copy of a document you own or have permission to modify.
The result depends on how the watermark was added. A watermark stored separately from the page content may be removable, while one embedded in a scanned image needs a different approach. Trying to select it with the mouse does not reliably tell you which type you have.
Remove a watermark from a PDF for free with PDFgear software
PDFgear is a free, full-featured PDF editor with a built-in watermark remover. It is a practical option if you want to remove a watermark from a PDF for free on Windows. You can remove PDF watermarks without logging in, because this workflow does not require an account.
- Download the PDFgear desktop app from the official website and launch it.
- Open the PDF containing the watermarks.
- Select Edit > Watermark > Delete Watermark.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
- Review the affected pages and save the result as a new PDF.
You can remove PDF watermarks offline with this desktop workflow; the document does not need to be uploaded to a server. For supported watermarks, the command targets the watermark rather than recreating each page, helping preserve the surrounding text, images, and layout.
If you need to remove a watermark from a PDF file but the mark remains after using the command, it may be ordinary page content or part of an image rather than a watermark the application recognizes. Switching to a paid editor does not automatically resolve that limitation.
Remove watermarks with Adobe Acrobat Pro
If you already subscribe to Adobe Acrobat Pro, its watermark removal command is another option for watermarks it recognizes. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader does not include this removal feature.
- Open a copy of the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Select All tools > Edit a PDF.
- Choose Watermark > Remove.
- Click Yes to confirm the removal.
- Check the pages and save the PDF under a new name.
This is most useful when you already work in Acrobat Pro. Purchasing it solely for a watermark embedded in a scanned page may not solve the problem, because that mark is part of the page image.
What if the watermark is embedded in a scanned PDF?
A standard watermark deletion command may not be enough to remove a watermark from a scanned PDF. If the watermark has been flattened into the page image, removing it can also damage letters, lines, or pictures beneath it. OCR can recognize visible text, but it cannot restore content hidden by the watermark.
When deciding how to remove a watermark from a PDF on Windows, try the dedicated removal command on a copy first. If the mark remains, obtaining an unwatermarked original is the most reliable way to retain the document’s appearance. If removal controls are disabled, check whether the PDF has editing restrictions and ask its owner for the appropriate password or an unrestricted copy.
