How do I recover data from laptop hard drive that won't turn on?
If you have access to another laptop or a desktop computer, you can install the problematic hard drive as a secondary drive. This method allows you to access the data directly from within the operating system of the host computer.
How to recover data from laptop hard drive using another computer
Step 1: Connect the hard drive to an available SATA/IDE port using the appropriate cables. Secure the drive in an empty drive bay. Connect the power cable to the hard drive.
Step 2: Insert the hard drive into the second drive bay or replace the existing drive with proper connection.
Step 3: Power on the computer. The installed hard drive should be recognized by the operating system as a secondary drive.
Step 4: Navigate to the newly recognized drive through the file explorer. Copy the necessary files to the host computer's internal storage or another external device.
Step 5: Shut down the host computer before disconnecting the problematic hard drive. Carefully remove the hard drive following the reverse steps of installation.
Pros:
- Direct Access: Provides full access to the hard drive as part of the system.
- No Additional Accessories Needed: Utilizes existing computer hardware.
Cons:
- Technical Expertise Required: Involves opening and configuring another computer.
- Potential Compatibility Issues: Ensuring the host computer recognizes the drive properly.
- Risk of Data Overwrite: Accidental modification or deletion if not careful.
