How do I completely uninstall applications on a mac?
Coming from Windows, it’s a bit of a shock that Mac doesn’t have a proper "Uninstall a Program" menu.
The short answer is: dragging an icon to the Trash only deletes the app itself, but it leaves all the "ghost files" (logs, caches, and registration folders) hidden in your system. To actually get a clean slate for free, here is the best way to do it:
1. The Manual Way (No tools required) : After you move the app to the Trash, you have to go hunting for its leftovers: Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, and type in ~/Library. You’ll need to check a few specific folders: Application Support, Caches, and Preferences. Search for folders with the app’s name or the developer’s name and move them to the Trash. This is the "old school" way to make sure your Mac stays lean.
2. The Easy Way (Free Utility) : If you don't want to play hide-and-seek with files, just use AppCleaner. It’s a tiny, 100% free app that’s been the "gold standard" for Mac users for years.
How to use: You just open AppCleaner and drag the app you want to delete into its window. It automatically finds every hidden file linked to that app so you can delete them all in one click. Personally, I always keep AppCleaner on my dock. It’s way faster than digging through folders and ensures your Mac doesn't get cluttered over time. Hope this helps!😃
