How can I transfer text messages from iphone to computer?

Hi everyone,

There are so many important contacts on my iPhone so I would like to backup all my text messages from my iPhone onto my computer, just in case something happens to my phone. I don't want to lose years of conversations with family and friends. The problem is, I'm not very tech‑savvy, and every time I search online, I get overwhelmed with options that seem too complicated. Can someone explain the simplest way to transfer text messages from iPhone to computer?

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about iCloud backups or syncing photos—I specifically want the actual text message conversations saved somewhere on my PC (Windows or Mac) so I can read them later if needed.

Ideally, I’d like them in a readable format such as PDF, txt or excel, not just a hidden database file. I've heard about using iTunes/Finder backups, but those don't let you view individual messages easily, right?

This is a command line approach for transferring iPhone text messages to computer.

    Step 1: Install imessage-exporter

In a fresh Terminal window, run the installation command :

    cargo install imessage-exporter

    Step 2: Grant Necessary Permissions

For the tool to read your messages, macOS needs your explicit permission .

Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.

Click the lock icon to make changes, then click the "+" button.

Navigate to and select Terminal (or whichever terminal app you are using). Make sure its toggle switch is turned ON.

Step 3: Run Your First Export

Once installed, you can run a basic export. The following command will export all your messages into a neat HTML folder in your home directory .

    imessage-exporter -f html -c full

After the process finishes, you can find your exported messages in a folder named imessage_export inside your user folder (/Users/your-username/imessage_export/).

How about trying the manual "Email to Yourself" method? This method is 100% free, requires no extra software, and works perfectly for saving important conversations. It is ideal if you only need to back up specific chats rather than every single message on your phone.

Here's how it works, step-by-step to transfer text messages from iPhone to computer:

Step 1: Open the Messages app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Open the conversation you want to save.

Step 3: Tap and hold on any message bubble within that conversation.

Step 4: From the pop-up menu, tap "More..." .

Step 5: You will now see checkable circles next to each message. Tap the circles to select all the messages you want to save. You can also tap "Select All" if it appears.

Step 6: Once your messages are selected, tap the forward arrow icon in the bottom-right corner .

Step 7: In the "To:" field, type your own email address.

Step 8: Tap the send button (the up arrow in a green circle).

You will now receive an email on your Windows computer containing all the selected messages as plain text. You can then save this email or copy the text into a document.

Best for: Before you transfer text messages from iPhone to computer. Saving one or a few specific conversations. This method is not practical for backing up your entire message history, as you would have to repeat these steps for every single contact.

When people talk about how to transfer text messages from iPhone to computer/ Mac, they are usually referring to iMessage sync —a feature built into Apple's ecosystem. Here is what it actually does and, more importantly, what it does not do.

    1. On your Mac, open the Messages app.

    2. Go to Settings (or Preferences) > iMessage.

    3. Sign in with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone.

    4. Check the box that says "Enable Messages in iCloud" (on newer macOS versions) or "Sync Messages" .

Once you do this, your Mac will start showing the same conversations that are on your iPhone. New messages arrive on both devices at the same time. Using Mac iMessage sync to transfer text messages from iPhone to computer is a great solution if your goal is simply to read your messages on a bigger screen while keeping them synced across devices. It is also fine if you only need to save one or two special conversations as PDF files.

Create a full backup using iTunes on Windows PC or Finder on Mac.

This is the official Apple method for backing up iPhone sms to a Windows PC or Mac. It creates a complete, encrypted snapshot of your iPhone, including all your messages. It's the best option for ensuring you don't lose your data if your phone is lost, damaged, or replaced.

How to transfer iPhone text messages to computer (Windows PC)

Step 1: Open iTunes on your computer.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone using a USB cable and click "Trust This Computer" on your phone if prompted.

Step 3: Click the small iPhone icon that appears near the top-left of the iTunes window.

Step 4: Under "Backups," select "This Computer."

Step 5: For a secure backup: Check the box that says "Encrypt local backup" and create a password you won't forget. This is required to save your Health and Keychain data.

Step 6: Click "Back Up Now." Your messages and other data will be saved to your computer

The main drawback is that you cannot open the backup file to read your messages on your computer. The backup is only useful for restoring your entire iPhone to its previous state.

To transfer text messages from iPhone to computer. If you only need to save one or two specific conversations rather than your entire history, use the manual export feature built into iOS.

    How it works:

    1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
    2. Tap and hold on a specific message bubble.
    3. Tap "More" .
    4. Select the bubbles you want to save.
    5. Tap the Share icon and email them to yourself or save them to Notes.

This approach is straightforward but requires manual effort. First, open the Messages app on your iPhone and scroll to the conversation you want to save. Then, take screenshots of the relevant parts of the conversation by pressing the side button and volume up button simultaneously (on newer iPhones). You can take multiple screenshots if the conversation is long. Next, connect your iPhone to your computer via USB or use cloud services like iCloud or AirDrop to transfer these screenshots. Once transferred, you can view, organize, or save the screenshots on your computer.

While this method may not be as seamless as dedicated software, it is a quick way to transfer text messages from iPhone to computer when you only need specific parts of your conversations.

Backing up text messages from iPhone to computer can fail for several reasons, ranging from simple connection issues to how Apple protects your data. Let me help you troubleshoot this step by step.

iPhone not showing up on PC

Why It Happens? Missing or outdated drivers, or an un-trusted device.

Fix: Unlock your iPhone. When prompted, tap "Trust This Computer" and enter your passcode. If it still doesn't appear, open Device Manager on your PC, find your iPhone under "Portable Devices," and update the driver.

Backup gets stuck or is very slow

Why It Happens? Often caused by a poor Wi-Fi connection, a damaged USB cable, or files changing during the backup process.

Fix: Switch to a USB connection if using Wi-Fi. Use an Apple-certified cable and plug it directly into your computer (avoid USB hubs). Before backing up, turn on Airplane Mode and don't use your phone until it finishes.

Can't find messages in a backup

Why It Happens? This happens if Messages in iCloud is turned on. Data stored in iCloud is not included in a local computer backup.

Fix: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and turn off "Messages" before creating your backup. This ensures all messages are saved to your computer instead.

    Additional Quick Checks:

Update Your Software: Make sure your PC has the latest version of iTunes or the Apple Devices app, and that your iPhone is updated to the newest iOS version.

Restart Everything: A simple restart of both your iPhone and your computer can resolve many temporary glitches.

By working through these steps, you should be able to backup or transfer sms from iphone to computer. If you're still having trouble, let me know what happens when you try—for example, if you see a specific error message or if it gets stuck at a certain percentage.
