How Can I Open a Winzip file on Windows 10 and Mac?
I'm having trouble opening a .zip file (WinZip archive) in Windows 10 and my Mac. When I double-click it, nothing happens, or I get an error. I've tried a few things, but it's still not working.
Here's what I've tried so far:
- Right-clicking and selecting "Extract All" (but sometimes the option doesn’t appear).
- Using File Explorer to open it (but it says the file is corrupted or unsupported).
What's the easiest way to open a winZip file in Windows 10 or Mac without WinZip? I prefer not using the winzip app as it installs several adware on my PC and it dramatically slow down my computer!

Not all free apps are super secure. Some might have vulnerabilities or even malware if you’re not careful about where you download them. About opening a winzip file. I once installed a free extractor that turned out to be adware, so now I stick to trusted sources like the Mac App Store. Sometimes, these apps don’t handle certain archive formats perfectly, especially if they’re using a newer or less common compression method. I’ve had times where a ZIP file with a password or special encoding wouldn’t open properly.
Free apps like The Unarchiver are great for extracting files, but they don’t give you much control — like creating zipped files, splitting archives, or managing multiple archives easily. If you need those features, you might need a paid app. Some free unarchivers come bundled with ads or optional extra software that you don’t want. Always read what you’re installing and skip anything unnecessary.
If the ZIP file is corrupted or incomplete, some apps might crash or refuse to open it. I’ve had archives that refused to open a winzip file because they got damaged during download.

If your WinZip isn’t up-to-date, or if you’re trying to open a newer archive created with a newer version, it might throw errors or refuse to open a WinZip file. Always make sure you’ve got the latest version installed. Sometimes, downloads get interrupted or the archive gets corrupted. If WinZip can’t unpack it properly, it’ll give you errors. Always verify the download is complete and intact before opening.
On both Windows and Mac, if you try to open or extract files to a restricted or system folder, you might run into permission issues. Better to extract to a straightforward location like Desktop or a dedicated folder where you have full access. While WinZip files are generally cross-platform, some archives might contain Mac-specific or Windows-specific files that don’t behave well on the other OS. Also, Mac might need a compatible archiving app if you’re not using WinZip on Mac.
If the archive is password-protected, and you try to open a WinZip file without entering the password, it’ll just give an error. Make sure you have the password handy. Opening archives from untrusted sources can be risky. A zipped file could hide malware. Always scan files with your antivirus before extracting, especially if you’re unsure about the source.
Just make sure you’re using the right app — on Windows, WinZip or 7-Zip work well; on Mac, The Unarchiver is pretty solid. And always keep backups if you’re dealing with important stuff, so you don’t lose anything if something goes wrong.
