Excel file was damaged. How to repair an excel file?
The SLK Format Trick is a useful technique to help repair an Excel file on a Windows PC, especially when the file is corrupted or cannot be opened normally. This method leverages saving the damaged Excel file as an SYLK (Symbolic Link) format, which can sometimes strip out the corruption and allow you to recover your data.
Here's how you can use the SLK Format Trick to repair Excel file:
1. Open the Damaged Excel File:
- First, try to open your damaged Excel file directly in Excel. If it opens with errors or missing data, proceed to the next step.
2. Save the File as SYLK Format:
- Go to File > Save As.
- Choose a location where you want to save the repaired copy.
- In the Save as type dropdown menu, select Symbolic Link (. slk).
- Click Save.
3. Close and Reopen the SLK File:
- Close the current Excel window.
- Locate the saved . slk file and open it in Excel again.
4. Save the File Back to XLSX Format:
- Once the SLK file opens and displays your data, go to File > Save As.
- Choose Excel Workbook (*. xlsx) as the format.
- Save the file with a new name.
This process often helps repair Excel file because saving as an SLK format can remove certain types of corruption or formatting issues. When you open the file again in the usual Excel format, it might contain the correct data and be free of the previous damage.
Important Notes:
The SLK format primarily supports data and some formatting, but not complex formulas or macros.
Always work on copies of your files to prevent further data loss.
