Desktop icon captions with shadow

Since the latest update yesterday my icon captions on the desktop have a shadow. I can't remove it, neither with the system options nor in the registry. Both options are ignored. It's really ugly an...

I never saw anything good coming out of a Windows update, but instead terrible things like that. Why do I keep the automated updates on?
