Can not restart

hello all. I have a dilemma today i tried shutting down my pc and it would not shut dow so i did it manually. When I tried to start it up it went directly to chkdsk and took forever to do it i tried to shut down again and then it would not start. The green light in the back of the tower was on and the fan was running and it was hot to the touch. I had to try several times to try to restart it and it finally restarted after the entire chkdsk stopped. So now i am afraid to shut down because i am afraid it will not start again or go directly to chkdsk and i can not stop that unless i force shut down and face another not start up. I called a tech but ill probably pay a lot to have it fixed and i have no back up so i am screwed . Unless you can give me a way with out losing everything. Thank you for any and all help.
