Best way to free up space on c drive without losing data?
Option 1: Disabling Hibernation to Free Up Space on C Drive Without Losing Data
Hibernation is a feature that saves the current state of your system to a file called hiberfil.sys on your C drive, allowing your PC to quickly resume where you left off. However, this file can be quite large—sometimes several gigabytes—especially on systems with limited storage like your Surface Laptop 2.
Disabling hibernation turns off this feature and deletes the hiberfil.sys file, freeing up that significant space on your C drive. The process is safe and straightforward, and it doesn't cause data loss. You won't lose your personal files or installed programs—just the hibernation option will be disabled.
How to do it:
1. Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for Command Prompt, right-click, then select 'Run as administrator').
2. Type the command:
powercfg /h off
3. Press Enter.
4. Wait for the command to execute. Once done, the large hibernation file will be removed, freeing up space on your C drive.
Option 2: Moving Files to External Storage or Cloud to Free Up Space on C Drive Without Losing Data
How to do it:
1. For external storage:
Connect your external drive.
Open File Explorer.
Copy or move large files or folders from your C drive to the external device.
2. For cloud storage:
Sign in to your cloud service.
Upload large files or folders.
Once uploaded, delete the local copies from your C drive to free space.
