Any simple way to batch rename images on Windows in mass amount?
Hello everyone,
I'm dealing with thousands of images with confusing, auto-generated names like ‘IMG_1234’ and ‘DSC_5678’ that are difficult to sort or locate when needed. I’m looking for a reliable way to rename all of them in a clear and consistent format in batches on my PC. Ideally, I’d like to be able to:
- Add prefixes, suffixes, or specific titles to groups of images.
- Insert sequential numbering for easy organization.
- Possibly keep some metadata intact, like the date and location, if available.
I’ve tried renaming some images manually, but with such a large collection, it’s just not practical. I’d really appreciate any advice on Windows software, scripts, or built-in features that can batch rename images in Windows. Ease of use and batch processing speed would be a big plus!
Thanks for the help!
For batch renaming, Any2PIC is perfect. It’s easy to use, lets you add prefixes, suffixes, and sequential numbers, and keeps metadata like dates. Fast and great for large collections!

weziweezeiza When choosing bulk rename software, consider the following factors to ensure it meets your needs:
1. Ease of Use: Look for a user-friendly interface that simplifies the renaming process. A clear layout and intuitive controls can save you time and reduce errors.
2. Features and Functionality: Ensure the software offers a variety of renaming options, such as: adding prefixes/suffixes, numbering files, changing file extensions.
3. Batch Processing Speed: Evaluate how quickly the software can handle large batches of files. Performance can be crucial if you're dealing with a high volume of files.
By taking these factors into account, you can easily batch rename images massively on Windows that will enhance your workflow and meet your specific file management needs.

After you rename image on Windows 11 computer. Always check that your file extensions remain intact. If you name them wrong, you'll end up with something bizarre like "Vacation.jpg.txt". To make sure this doesn't happen, only rename the part before the extension.
Use Date & Events
Want to get a bit fancier? If you took photos on specific dates or for certain events, consider including those in your base name. For example:
2023-10-01_Vacation_001
2023-10-01_Vacation_002
This way, you can easily identify when and where those photos were taken! - Bround325Copper ContributorLet's get one thing straight – always back up your files before doing any major renaming. You never know what might go wrong (trust me, I’ve been there). lmagine accidentally renaming all images to "IMG_001", "IMG_002", etc., and losing track of what’s what. Hook up an external drive or cloud storage before diving in.
- HupixdelIron ContributorThis one can get tricky. When you rename images or files on Windows 11, Windows will automatically keep the extension (like .jpg or .png) if you do it right, but if you mess with it, you might end up with “photo.jpg.txt”. Just be mindful! Always double-check those extensions before hitting Enter.

How to rename images free on Windows computer? Step-by-step guide to batch rename images:
1. Select Your Images
First things first! Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder where your images are stored. Select all the photos you want to rename. You can click and drag to select a bunch or hold down the Ctrl key and click on individual files.2. Right-Click and Rename
Once you’ve got your images selected, right-click on one of them. You’ll see an option called Rename. Click on that, or just hit F2 on your keyboard.3. Enter the New Name
Now, type the base name you want for your images. For instance, if you want your photos to be named "Vacation", just type that in. After you hit Enter, Windows will automatically rename all selected images like this:Vacation (1)
Vacation (2)
Vacation (3)
And so on... - EventfronCopper Contributor
You might be tempted to use fancy naming tools, but sometimes the built-in tools do the job just fine. To quickly batch rename images on Windows computer:
- Select your images in File Explorer.
- Right-click and choose Rename, or just hit F2.
- Type the new name and hit Enter. Windows will auto-increment the numbers (e.g., "Vacation (1)", "Vacation (2)", etc.).
If you need something a bit more robust, tools like Bulk Rename Utility can be a lifesaver, but keep it simple first!

weziweezeiza Install Microsoft PowerToys. Use the "PowerRename" utility within PowerToys to bulk rename images in Windows with powerful options like search and replace, adding numbers, and regex support.
Pros: Flexible and powerful renaming options, including advanced search and replace.
Cons: Requires installing PowerToys, and the interface may feel a bit technical for beginners.
- ZoedopCopper ContributorThe built-in Windows File Explorer. Select all images you want to rename, right-click on the first image, and select "Rename." Type a new name, and Windows will automatically rename the rest with the same name, appending a number in parentheses (e.g., Image (1), Image (2)). This is a quick simple way to batch rename images on Windows PC.

Zoedop Windows File Explorer is a basic tool for bulk renaming multiple images but it is definitely not the best choice as File Explorer doesn’t allow you to incorporate image metadata (such as date taken, location, or camera type) into filenames, which can be crucial for organizing photo collections meaningfully. This is a big issue when it comes to rename multiple images at once with different names on a PC or Mac.
Once you press "Enter" to apply the changes, there’s no simple “undo” option in File Explorer for renaming. If the naming doesn’t work as expected, you’d need to rename everything manually or rely on third-party software to revert changes.

Zoedop Windows File Explorer for bulk renaming images can be limiting in several ways. First, it doesn’t allow for much flexibility in renaming options. You can only specify a base name, and Windows will append a simple number sequence. Customization options like adding prefixes, suffixes, or modifying individual parts of the name are unavailable.
What is more, there’s no way to use advanced formatting, such as replacing parts of the filename, applying specific patterns, or setting custom numbering schemes. For example, you can't add a date format or use variables in names.
In my option, if you want to mass rename images on Windows PC, you should use the free PowerToy utility instead though the learning curve is a bit sharp for beginners.
