Possible File History Issues After KB5101684 and KB5120249 on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Hello,

I would like to ask whether other Windows 10 or Windows 11 users have experienced problems with File History.

My laptop is running Windows 11 version 25H2. Before installing KB5101684, File History had always worked normally. Whenever files were backed up to my D: drive, the “Last backup” time shown in File History updated correctly.

Everything was still working normally around 10:00 AM on July 28–29, 2026, before KB5101684 was installed. However, the problem appeared after installing KB5101684.

I have already confirmed that:

  • File History is still turned on.
  • My D: drive is working normally and can be accessed without any problems.
  • Files still appear to be backed up to the D: drive.
  • However, the “Last backup” time shown in File History does not update correctly.

What concerns me even more is that my Windows 10 version 22H2 desktop computer also started experiencing a similar File History synchronization problem after installing KB5120249 on August 12, 2026.

So far, this is what I have observed:

Windows 11 25H2 → KB5101684 installed on July 29, 2026 → File History problem appeared
Windows 10 22H2 → KB5120249 installed on August 12, 2026 → Similar File History problem appeared

This makes me seriously concerned that these issues may be related to recent Windows updates, changes to File History, or a possible regression.

I have already reported and asked Microsoft about this issue through multiple channels. I have also spent a considerable amount of time testing and troubleshooting it myself, including checking the Windows versions, KB updates, backup drives, and the actual File History data.

However, I still have not received a clear response from Microsoft.

Honestly, I am very disappointed. Users have already provided specific Windows versions, KB update numbers, and detailed test results, but Microsoft has still not clearly confirmed whether these problems are related to KB5101684 or KB5120249.

Microsoft, please do not ignore this issue. I hope the technical team will seriously investigate it, determine whether these updates are causing the problem, and provide users with a clear answer and a practical solution.

If you are also experiencing the same or a similar problem with File History on Windows 10 or Windows 11, please leave a comment below and share your Windows version, installed KB update, and what you are experiencing.

Thank you.

  • The key detail is that new files are still appearing under D:\FileHistory, while only the Last backup display and version timeline remain stale. That suggests the backup engine may be writing data but the File History catalog or restore interface is not reflecting it. Microsoft’s KB5101684 release notes list no known issue and include a File History fix for SMB destinations, so a regression is not officially confirmed. First, use Restore personal files and verify that a test file can be opened and restored. Then run File History manually from Control Panel and recheck after a restart. Test a new folder and, if possible, a separate destination to distinguish catalog corruption from source scanning. Do not delete the existing backup or remove a security update yet. Install the latest cumulative update, then submit Feedback Hub reports from both PCs with the KB numbers, build numbers, destination type, and timestamps.
