The last update really messed up my computer . I had to do a restore and put everything back in . It makes me paranoid about accepting updates . Can I stop them ?

It was the last security update I think . All my desktop icons were all messed up and I couldn't fix it till I did a restore . Makes me paranoid about accepting any more updates . I put off updates for a time , but don't know how to permanently stop them .
- Would you mind explain more on what happens to icons, are they changed? Or the location changed?
Check Windows Update history and see if there was any update related to graphic card driver too?
