Up to Date Windows Update Method

There is a company that I help with that needs some Windows update assistance and improvement.

They are mostly using WSUS, but their GPOs are incorrect in many ways - old settings, incorrect settings, etc.  Their WSUS seems unhealthy too.

We want to modernize and simplify their updates.  It seems to me that WSUS is out of style these days, and SCCM, which they use, just seems like too much to manage.

WuFb seems to be the recommendation for an on-prem AD environment like theirs.  But, it really looks like they lose a lot of reporting capabilities.  We'd love to be able to see if devices are behind on patches, like if the Updates are failing.  If we move to WuFb, do we lose these reporting capabilities?  As far as I know, we could still use WSUS for reporting, but that seems messy.  

How do we simplify and modernize updates but still have the reporting\statistic capability?

They do not have Azure AD or Intune, by the way.
