Enablement Packages through MEM

I just spent the last 6 weeks getting a majority of user's systems up to Windows 10 20H2.  They are all hybrid joined to AAD and are enrolled in MEM(Intune).  I used the Windows 10 feature update Policy to update a majority of them from 1809 and 1909.  My question is if I change the policy property in my Windows 10 Feature policy, will an enablement package be offered to my users or will they have to go through the same upgrade process it took to get them to 20H2 from 1809/1909?  If they have to go through the upgrade process, would deploying an enablement package through Intune be a good option or is there a better option (MECM with a CMG)?  My end goal is to keep releasing enablement packages to my users to avoid the disruption of the upgrade process to my users every year or so.

    Hi Tim Overdorf ,

If your end goal is to reap the benefits of the enablement package to avoid the full feature upgrade process for your end users, how you deploy whether through Intune or CMG won't make a significant difference to the end user experience. To avoid the full feature upgrade process going forward, you'll need your devices to get on 20H1 minimum such that future feature upgrades (such as 21H2 going forward) are only enablement packages and avoid the full feature upgrade experience.

Since you're devices are on 1809/1909 since they are already end of service, they will get offered the latest OS version available unless you have Feature Update deferrals in place.

  • For devices on 20H2, the feature update to 21H1 will be via enablement package. In fact, that is one of the benefits of staying current, is minimizing the full upgrade processes. And you'll get the enablement package benefit using Intune's Feature Update profiles. What also nice is that if you are updating a device from an older Windows build that requires the full update, that will automatically be done for that(those) device(s).
