SSD defrag
The disagreement is mainly about what “defrag” means. An SSD does not need the frequent, traditional file rearrangement used to improve a mechanical hard drive’s access times. However, it still benefits from Windows’ drive optimization, which includes TRIM/retrim so the storage device knows which blocks are no longer needed. Windows distinguishes these operations according to the drive type. Open Start, search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, and check that your drive’s Media type is Solid state drive. Leave Scheduled optimization enabled and let Windows manage the appropriate maintenance. Do not install a separate utility just to repeatedly force traditional defragmentation. Microsoft also documents that scheduled SSD maintenance can occasionally include defragmentation, so “Windows must never defragment an SSD” is too absolute. If the drive is incorrectly identified or optimization reports an error, share that exact message and your Windows version before changing anything.
