After a lot of research the basic answer came back that the update cycle corrupted the OS and it was unrecoverable. I was still able to get into the BIOS so it was just a case of creating a 'boot disk' from another Win11 machine and booting off that into a fresh image.

You'll need a 16 or 32Gb USB stick to burn it on. Then its just a case of sticking it in the failed laptop, boot it up, press whatever key is appropriate for your laptop to drop into BIOS, and then scroll up and down the options on the boot selector until you see the boot disk.
You might have a challenge using a trackpad or mouse for cursor controls if the drivers haven't loaded so be prepared to use the arrow keys plus tab/space bar to cycle through the various options.
Good luck.
