Microsoft has identified the problem, and it is related to an updated component that is shared between Office apps. The crash only happens on OSX 10.11.x, and the update only went to a small set of users. We are working on rolling back the update.

Since the problem is a shared component, this might also explain why Outlook will sometimes crash too, even on the background, although I haven't checked why as I just did with Skype for Business.
Anytime frame as to when will the rollback be available ?

I was told by engineering that the rollback is complete, so all affected users should be back to normal.

I hope the fix is permanent and Skype won't break again with the next upgrade. If this happens again in the next couple of days. I'll post here again.

Yes, this was a server component and unrelated to the clients. Now that we are aware of the issue, they will fix the component (and verify on El Capitan) before attempting another rollout of the update.
