rows not being added to the table
- Oct 15, 2026
That error usually means Excel’s insertion would shift only part of another table, which it won’t allow. The fourth table can trigger it even if you’re adding the row to the second one.
Check the actual boundaries of all four tables using Table Design > Resize Table. Compare the starting and ending worksheet columns, not just the number of visible columns. A table may include an extra blank column that isn’t obvious.
For your side-by-side layout, try this on a copy:
- Select one row of cells at the insertion point, spanning the full width of that vertical stack, including the full width of every table below that will be shifted.
- Right-click > Insert > Shift cells down.
- Check whether the new row is included in the second table. If not, extend its range through Table Design > Resize Table.
This can leave the neighbouring stacks untouched, provided the selected columns don’t cut through any other table.
If there’s no column range that fully covers the affected tables without intersecting the neighbouring ones, Excel can’t do that local insertion safely. Leaving spare rows between tables can reduce the problem, but Excel doesn’t automatically rearrange a grid of independent tables. A screenshot showing the worksheet column letters and all table boundaries would help identify exactly where the overlap is.
THANKS A LOT
I found another fact if number of columns are same in the column of grid then while adding a row dose not cause this problem, but as soon as try to add a column it shows "this won't work because it would move cells in a table on your worksheet".
when i have reconfigured my grid to accommodate the extra column and i try to add a row in table above such table then the above highlighted message shows. Interestingly when such column is add in a table any table below or sideways lets me add a row but not the table above such table .
so, all in all problem i understood is
when you try to add a column to an already existing table who has neighbors above and below of same number of columns it causes problems in following situations
- if you try add a row in any of the above table.
- if you try to add a column to table.
thanks for trying to solve my mistake
THANKS A LOT your method actually worked.
can you explain me why it happened and how can i implement this when i want to add column in such i grid
