ADFS + SharePoint 2016 migration to SharePoint Subscription Edition

A SharePoint 2016 farm with ADFS used for external user authentication needs to be migrated to SharePoint Server subscription edition.

Will there be any alternative for ADFS? can this be done without ADFS?
