Where do the contacts come from that are at choice for a people picker column in sharepoint online?
A customer was asking this question because a few people in his company were surprised finding private contacts within their SharePoint Online when starting to type a people's name in a people picker field.
I tried it myself from a virtual machine where none of my contacts ever have been used.
Surprise: Even e-mail adresses that haven't been used for a long time and definitely aren't saved within my contacts list were retrieved when I started typing...
So does anyone may explain where those adresses are retrieved from?
Is there a way for companies to avoid this?
Thanx for your replies!

Since all the users for M365 are stored on Azure AD, SharePoint Online and other services utilize the AD for Users, Groups and Contacts.
