New to Sharepoint online, design assistance with structure

Hi everyone. We implemented Teams and love it. We now want to transition from box.com to sharepoint for our file storage.

I started just creating document libraries in my traditional sharepoint site but now got educated on teams plus modern sites, wow!!!

Here is my question. We have a company wide (only 36 of us) team setup with our company name and all employees auto join it. This is where we share company wide information.

We also have channels for sharing travel schedules, general chit chat, etc. i am thinking I could promote the sharepoint site behind this to a hub site. We have doc libraries for inspiration photos (we are a creative design company), another channel containing our clients brand specs etc. i would think this should be a communication site but everyone should be able to publish to it. Is that ok? How do I make the root a communication site? Or should it be a team site? Do I make that one a hub site or do I make a root communication site the hub site and “link” to this team site?

Just trying to get my bearings around this to do it once...
  • My two cents here:
    (1) Yes, you can promote the site behind to be a Hub Site...a Hub Site can be any of the modern sites we can have in SPO: a communication site or a Team site.
    (2) Your idea of having a Communication site instead of a Team Site makes totally sense. Bad news here is that you cannot convert a Team site into a communication site or viceversa...so if you want to have your content in a comm site, you have to move current content to the comm site you create
    (3) You can modernize the root site by using PowerShell (Enable-SPOCommSite cmdlet) or alternatively, you can create a brand new communication site in your tenant and make a site swap so it becomes the root site

jcgonzalezmartin thank you for the response!

Is there anything you can do in a communication site you cannot do in a team site?  I guess I am not 100% sure I need to separate them.  I like the idea of all of my files available in Teams for easy access vs jumping to sharepoint.  So promoting the general company team site to a hub site might be a simple and easy approach for me.  But is there any functionality I would be missing out?

How stable is the powershell conversion?  I have never done anything like that before and I have lots of data there so I am very nervous about screwing that up.

How do I do a root site swap?  If I did that would my users “sync” folders remain intact?  That is my other concern lots of users are syncing from my old sharepoint site so when I do this I am assuming they are all going to have to stop sharing and start it on the new site
