In SharePoint; When not to use Content Types | When Content Types are unnecessary?

As a developer/architect, I am using SharePoint for a few years and always created Content Types when creating lists.

1. Do we always have to use a content type? 
2. What are the scenarios a content type is not necessary to be created?
