Crawled properties

I have a hover panel modification that shows who has a document checked out. It works great in my dev environment, but when implementing into production there is an issue:

on the dev environment there is a crawled property called: ows_CheckoutUser and ows_q_USER_CheckoutUser

I used these to map a managed property that I then can display in the panel.

However the production environment does not have these crawled properties. Has anyone see this? is there something that needs to be turned on to enable these?
