After enabling Communication sites the SPFx extensions aren't working for me.

Earlier this week I played around with the SPFx placeholders solution where a custom header/footer can be aded to sites. Yesterday I enabled first release for selected users, so that I could have a look at the new communication sites.

This morning I have found that the header and footer put in place by the app extensions aren't working anymore. Anybody else seen this happen?
