Tracking what's new in MSIX and what's supported in Win10/11!
There have been numerous new features introduced over the years at Build/Ignite/etc that initially pop up in the insider releases before (hopefully) making their way over to the official releases.
Whilst there is a handy table showing which features are compatible with which OS versions:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/supported-platforms#windows-desktop
There are many new features missing. I combed through the docs to find the following new features - it appears most are still in preview assuming the docs are correct and up to date:
- Flexible Virtualization
Windows 10 21H1
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/desktop/flexible-virtualization - Start Menu Groups
Windows 10 Dev Ring 20257
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/packaging-tool/create-start-group - Legacy Context Menu Support
Windows 11 Insider Preview 22000
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/packaging-tool/support-legacy-context-menus - Shared Package Container
Windows 10 Insider Preview 21354
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/manage/shared-package-container - Mutable Package Directories
Windows 11
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/manage/create-directory - MSIX Persistent Identity
Windows 11 Insider Preview 22000
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/package/persistent-identity
Shared Package Container is in the previous table with support listed for Windows 11 21H2, but the page for that feature only mentions Windows 10 Insider Preview. I am therefore unsure about whether or not these other preview features have yet finally made it into production!
It would be great to see these other features added to the support matrix, highlighting which features are still in preview.
It would also be nice to have a "What's new in MSIX" page listing these to help us keep track of the latest additions!
I've sent feedback via Github also, but sharing it here also for better visibility.
