"Something went wrong. Primary and secondary data missing" when viewing email submission

Does anyone know what causes the "Something went wrong. Primary and secondary data missing" error when viewing an email submission in Microsoft Defender?  It happens sporadically, but on I would guess 5% - 10% of our submissions.

The error “Something went wrong. Primary and secondary data missing” in Microsoft Defender typically occurs when the system cannot retrieve all the necessary information from the back-end stores that process email submissions. Defender relies on both a primary store that holds the submission details and a secondary store that holds things like message trace and verdict data. If one of these sources is missing or fails to respond, you’ll see that error instead of the expected analysis.

It tends to occur in a small percentage of cases, just as you noticed, and is often linked to one of three things: the original message is no longer available because it was purged or aged out, or there is a replication delay. Hence, the submission and the trace data aren’t yet aligned, or there is a temporary backend hiccup on Microsoft’s side. There isn’t anything you can configure in your tenant to fix this issue, but in most cases, rechecking later or resubmitting the message resolves the problem. If you find the problem persists for the same submission or the error rate climbs above normal, it’s best to open a support ticket with Microsoft so they can confirm whether the issue is service-side.
