Microsoft 365 Developer E5 license lacking endpoints and device on defender portal

Dear Support Team,

I am a microsoft certified trainer (MCT). I currently have a Microsoft 365 Developer E5 license assigned to my tenant. However, I have noticed that my Microsoft Defender portal (security.microsoft.com) is missing several critical features. For example, I cannot see the Endpoints or Devices menus, which is preventing me from implementing and testing Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

Additionally, my Azure tenant and Microsoft 365 tenant are separate. This has created challenges when configuring security services such as Microsoft Sentinel (SIEM), as certain prerequisites and integrations require configuration through the Microsoft Defender portal. Due to the missing Defender features, I am unable to complete the necessary setup.

I would appreciate your assistance in understanding:

  1. Why the Endpoints and Devices sections are unavailable in my Defender portal despite having a Microsoft 365 Developer E5 license.
  2. Whether additional licensing, onboarding steps, or tenant configurations are required to enable Microsoft Defender for Endpoint features.
  3. How best to integrate or align my separate Azure and Microsoft 365 tenants to support services such as Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR.

These issues are significantly impacting my ability to evaluate and implement Microsoft's security solutions. I would appreciate any guidance or recommendations to resolve them.

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind regards,
[Your Name]

  • I have same problem myfriend

being an MCT for over a decade, I had issue my DeveloperE5 license and got a initial tenant (lets call it Tenant01) on which I had implement and use azure VisualStudio Subscriptions too !!
At some point of someone remembered, I used AzureStudentPass as well ... !!
So on Tenant01, I had 25lic of E5 Developer, AND Azure Subs. as MCT with 150$/month

Without any reason some time MS disabled my E5 license on that tenant, and leave me only with the Azure VisualStdSubscription !!

I went back to Developer help, and they create a NEW tenant (lets call it Tenant02) with E5 Dev. license on that tenant, BUT WITHOUT azure subscription !! ;)

No I am teaching specific courses and I need to "switch" from Tenant01 to Tenant02, and sometimes this is not feasible because there are courses that needs access to BOTH E5 license AND AzureSubscription !!

I spent several hours trying to move-merge licenses-subscription to only 1 tenant, but MS help was either not so helpful (or maybe they didnt understand the problem ...)

If you have any reply , pls share your thought
    Regards
    Panos

    Hi,

The Microsoft 365 Developer E5 subscription is primarily intended for development and testing Microsoft 365 applications. While it includes many E5 capabilities, some Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Defender XDR features may not be fully provisioned or enabled by default, which can result in missing Endpoints and Devices menus.

Here are a few things you can check:

    • Verify that Microsoft Defender for Endpoint has been provisioned and that the required licenses are assigned to your user account.
    • Confirm that you have the necessary admin role (such as Security Administrator or Global Administrator) to access all Defender portal features.
    • If you're using a Microsoft 365 Developer tenant, note that some advanced security capabilities may have limitations compared to a commercial Microsoft 365 E5 tenant.
    • For Microsoft Sentinel, it's generally recommended that the Azure subscription hosting Sentinel and the Microsoft 365 tenant are properly connected. If they belong to different Microsoft Entra tenants, you'll need to configure cross-tenant access or use Azure Lighthouse, depending on your scenario.

If the required menus are still missing after verifying licensing and permissions, you may want to review Microsoft's onboarding guidance for Defender for Endpoint or open a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to confirm whether your developer subscription is eligible for those features.

Hopefully this helps point you in the right direction. Let us know what you've already checked, such as your assigned licenses and admin roles, and the community can provide more specific guidance.

  • Hi, first confirm you are in the correct tenant and that Defender for Endpoint is actually provisioned and assigned, not just the developer tenant itself. The Endpoints/Devices areas may not appear until the service is enabled and devices are onboarded. Separate Azure and Microsoft 365 tenants can also cause confusion, so verify the portal tenant switcher carefully.
